Interests
The professor asked in lecture today what interests the class had in Japan. These might be paper topics or subjects touched on in lecture or section. They included: art Japan as a model for American instituions high tech culture cultural exports (manga, movies, etc) religion the ability to assimilate other cultures while maintaining Japaneseness Ainu and other minority groups Christianity mix of tradition and modernity Geisha violent/war-like Japan vs. modern passive Japan These are all good topics. The professor mentioned that 'diversity' in terms of minority groups will not be covered much in lecture. I might be open to discussing this topic in discussion if you feel strongly about it. The professor also mentioned Geisha won't be discussed except in the context of women's roles. The professor will create a list of paper topics and your ideas have a better chance of making that list if you let us know your own interests.
